CLIMATE CHANGE AND ACTIONS
Global warming and climate change are the challenges of the millennium. These phenomena have become a threat to the environment, to sustainable development and a deterrent to economic growth and global welfare. Climate change mitigation and adaptation measures should become a priority of national policy. Studies also show that the impact of global warming is directly proportional to the population’s living standards and mostly affects people in countries, who have actually polluted the least. The Republic of Moldova is no exception in that and is facing the negative impact of the phenomena like the catastrophic drought in 2007 and devastating floods in 2008 and 2010. As a result, climate change poses a serious threat to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s), which Moldova has committed to after signing the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and after the accession to the Kyoto Protocol.
Climate change and actions can however also create opportunities for transforming the economy in the direction of greater sustainability in a broad sense, thus paving the way towards poverty reduction and the achievement of the MDGs. Moldova has set itself an ambitious goal in developing the National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy.
