ECOLOGY / ENVIRONMENT

The natural resources of the Republic of Moldova and the regime of their use determine to a great extent the state of the environment. It cannot be ignored that current anthropogenic activities on natural ecosystems have a severe negative impact, causes imbalance and leads to irreversible changes. Moldova has therefore major environmental challenges that extend across the entire environmental acquis. Also the quality and diversity of Moldova’s ecosystem is a subject of a growing concern. Several topics are determined that need to be given priority for sustainable solutions.

The condition of the water resources is of special concern in Moldova. Protection and sustainable use of these resources is therefore a priority, considered at the national and local level. Also combatting pollution by wastes in the neighborhood of water sources, infiltrations from landfills, non-functioning wastewater treatment plants, and improvised dumpsites for household waste needs full attention. Air pollution in Moldova – also transboundary - is a problem of growing concern. Decreasing soil erosion and clean-up operations are other important priorities. To increase the bio-diversity in Moldova more effort need to be put on further enlargement of the protected areas and an expansion of the forestation in the country.

The Republic of Moldova considers the ‘Environment for Europe’ process an important one, because this process is being both an excellent environmental regulator and an influential event offering the opportunity to develop an increasingly close relationship in an international setting with countries and organizations.

ACTIVITIES

To contribute to a sustainable improvement of the quality of the environment and the biodiversity. In particular:

  • By being ambitious to be an active partner in the execution of the priorities as set by the Ministry of Environment and other national and international organizations
  • To stimulate research on the state of the environment and to identify needs for action, research and policy
  • By identifying threats and impacts on the vulnerability of the environment and biodiversity in Moldova
  • To initiate cooperation with and between authorities at different levels and collaboration with academia in matters related to the quality of the environment and biodiversity
  • Contributing to environmental monitoring, data collection and analysis at national, regional, local and transboundary levels
  • To promote the implementation of measures to improve the quality of the environment and the increase of the biodiversity
  • To facilitate in conducting a strategy that strengthens the access to information, supports public awareness and public participation in the decision making process regarding environmental issues
  • Through participation in activities to implement international legal obligations at a national level to improve the quality of the environment and the biodiversity at a short, medium and long term

INQUA-Moldova aims to actively support a sustainable improvement of the quality of the environment and the biodiversity in the Republic of Moldova by initiating and conducting studies and projects in this regard as well by contributing to existing and new projects and activities through their experience and expertise.

    • Groundwater quality assessment and modernization and extension of the
    • Groundwater monitoring network;
      extension of the laboratories’ analytical network and capacities in line with the European requirements for potable water
